This article highlights three different types of well pumps commonly used for residential wells.

 

1. Submersible

 

A submersible well pump is a long cylindrical metal device placed within the well to pump water. This pump uses a motor to draw groundwater and pumps it up via a flow sleeve into the reservoir above the ground.

 

A submersible well pump is popular among many people since this pump has a powerful suction force, allowing your pump to move water over long distances. Furthermore, this pump utilizes gravity in the pumping process, meaning your energy costs will reduce. For these reasons, a submersible pump is suitable for deep wells.

 

Another factor that makes a submersible pump popular is its durability. According to most people, this pump can serve you up to 25 years , allowing you to save on the cost of buying new well pumps regularly.

 

A submersible pump lasts long for several reasons. First, since you have to place this pump underwater, its engine is constantly cold, meaning the motors won't burn out quickly. Also, this pump is watertight, preventing water from reaching the motor. If water reaches your motor, it will corrode the metal parts and your pump may stop working.

 

2. Jet

 

A jet pump is simply a non-submersible well pump that draws water from a well via a suction pipe to provide water for domestic use. Since you don't have to install this pump within the well, maintaining this pump is quite easy.

 

Jet pumps come in two major types:

 

  • Single-drop . This jet pump is similar to a submersible well pump in terms of features and functionality. The only difference between the two pumps is that a single-drop pump can only draw water from a shallow well. Additionally, you'll have to install a single-drop jet pump within your home.
  • Double-drop . A double drop pump is more powerful than a single-drop pump. This pump has more impellers and diffusers than the single-drop jet pump. Moreover, this pump has a jet injector that enables your pump to draw water from a deep well. Although you'll install the jet unit within the well, the impeller motor remains above the ground.

 

One thing worth noting about a jet pump is that this pump requires priming to work properly. Priming refers to refilling your jet pump with water before it begins to operate. Operating a dry pump can permanently damage your pump.

 

3. Centrifugal

 

A centrifugal well pump is a device that comes with impellers to help you draw water from the well into your home. When these impellers rotate, they create a suction force and draw water. Once water enters the fast-rotating impeller, the machine casts water throughout the impeller's perimeter through centrifugal force. As the impeller rotates, it pushes water to the pump's outlet.

 

There are several advantages of using a centrifugal well pump. First, this pump doesn't have drive seals, eliminating corrosion risks. This pump is also affordable compared to other pumps.

 

Nevertheless, a centrifugal pump is small, meaning this pump cannot draw water from a deep well.

 

A well pump is an essential device in any home that depends on well water since this machine helps to supply cleaner water and cut water costs.
